Anxiety can feel exhausting.
You may find yourself constantly thinking ahead, imagining what could go wrong, struggling to switch off, or feeling tense even when there is no obvious danger. Many people tell me they know they are safe, yet their mind and body behave as though something bad is just around the corner.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.
What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a state experienced in both the mind and body.
Often the mind is trying to protect us by scanning for potential danger, anticipating problems, or preparing for situations that may never happen. Many people experience a sense of unease, dread, or feeling on edge, even when they cannot identify a clear reason.
Anxiety can affect sleep, concentration, confidence, relationships, and the ability to enjoy the present moment. For some people it is present most of the time, while for others it appears in specific situations.
Although uncomfortable, anxiety is often the mind and body's attempt to keep us safe.
What Does Anxiety Feel Like?
Anxiety can show up differently for different people.
You may experience:
Racing thoughts
Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
A racing heart
A sense of impending danger
Feeling unable to relax
Constant overthinking
Difficulty enjoying the present moment
Feeling overwhelmed by everyday situations
Wanting to withdraw from life
Feeling stuck in loops of worry and anticipation
Sometimes people understand exactly why they feel anxious. At other times they simply know that something feels wrong, without fully understanding why.
Why Do People Experience Anxiety?
There is no single cause of anxiety.
For some people it develops after difficult life experiences, trauma, grief, loss, or prolonged periods of stress. For others it may be linked to patterns learned earlier in life, such as expecting things to go wrong, feeling responsible for everyone else's wellbeing, or struggling to trust themselves.
Sometimes the original reason is obvious. Sometimes it is not.
Even when the conscious mind has moved on, the nervous system can continue reacting as though danger is still present. This can leave people feeling trapped in cycles of worry, tension, and anticipation despite wanting life to feel different.
What Keeps Anxiety Going?
One of the things that keeps anxiety alive is fighting it.
The more we struggle against anxiety, demand answers from it, or try to force it away, the more attention and energy we give it.
Other common patterns that can maintain anxiety include:
Avoidance
Avoiding situations, people, or experiences can bring short-term relief, but it can also reinforce the belief that the world is dangerous and that you are unable to cope.
Reassurance Seeking
Constantly looking outside yourself for certainty may ease anxiety temporarily, but the relief rarely lasts. Before long, the anxiety returns and the cycle begins again.
Overthinking
Many people believe they can think their way out of anxiety. In reality, constant analysis often creates mental exhaustion. It is not endless thinking that creates safety, but learning how to feel safe within yourself.
Negative Forecasting
When the mind constantly searches for what could go wrong, it also begins collecting evidence to support those fears. Over time this strengthens anxiety and reinforces self-doubt.
Self-Criticism
If your inner voice constantly tells you that you are failing, not doing enough, or not coping well enough, anxiety often grows stronger.
Poor Boundaries
Saying yes when you need to say no can leave the nervous system feeling unsupported and overwhelmed. Over time this can contribute to stress, resentment, and anxiety.
Chronic Stress
Without enough rest, recovery, or space to process life's challenges, the nervous system can remain stuck in a state of high alert.
Living Out of Alignment
When we repeatedly ignore our values, needs, and desires, we can become disconnected from ourselves. This often leaves people feeling stuck, frustrated, and uncertain about the direction of their lives.
Can Anxiety Get Better?
I believe it can.
Healing anxiety is not about eliminating every anxious thought or never feeling fear again.
It is about developing a different relationship with yourself.
Over time, people begin to trust themselves more. They learn what they need, what they value, what they enjoy, and what no longer serves them. They become more confident in saying no when necessary and yes when something genuinely matters to them.
As self-trust grows, the nervous system often becomes less reactive because the person feels safer in themselves and in their ability to navigate life.
Recovery is not perfection.
It is having more choice, more freedom, and more peace than anxiety would have allowed before.
How I Work
I believe therapy works best when we work together as a team.
You are the expert in your life, and I bring my experience as a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Solution Focused Hypnotherapist.
Together we explore what may be keeping anxiety alive, identify patterns that no longer serve you, and develop practical ways forward.
My role is not to tell you who you are. My role is to help you understand yourself more clearly.
I offer a compassionate and supportive space where you can reflect, gain perspective, and reconnect with your own strengths.
Often there is laughter. Always there is respect.
You remain the driver of your own ship.
My role is to help you navigate.
What Progress Can Look Like
Progress is often made up of small shifts rather than dramatic breakthroughs.
Many people struggle to identify exactly what has changed at first, yet something feels different.
They begin to trust themselves more.
They speak about their lives with greater confidence.
They feel clearer about what they want.
Decisions become easier.
Boundaries feel more natural.
Life begins to open up again.
Alongside this, people often notice practical improvements such as:
Less overthinking
Better sleep
Reduced self-criticism
Greater confidence
Improved emotional resilience
A stronger sense of direction
An increased ability to stay present
One of the greatest privileges of my work is witnessing people reconnect with their own strength, direction, and potential.
